The Moccatomic shoe starts with our signature last and pairs two of our favorite ideas in footwear together for the first time:
- - hand-lasted moccasin ('Mocca') for a properly formed shoe in a range of styles having timeless appeal.
- - groovy, anatomic soul ('tomic') for the all-day support and the mold-to-your feet comfort of a cork midsole.
In addition to style, comfort and construction, the Moccatomic shoe also features premium components - full grain leather, a Vibram® outsole (available in our signature orange color), and a full, top-grain leather lining.
our signature last. The last is the form used in shoemaking that ultimately is responsible for the unique look and fit of the shoe. Ask any shoedog and they will tell you, 'it all starts with the last'. Our lasts (one for men, one for women) are special. They were both carved, sanded, shaped, tested and finally finished in a model shop in Worcester, MA, by the master last-making duo of Gordon Ricci and Maria Leo.
Because we build our shoes directly on a contoured, anatomic cork midsole – with no insole - our lasts are contoured (as opposed to the industry's more commonly used, 'flat' last. A contoured last models the undulating shape of the bottom of your foot – as opposed to a flat last, which is just... flat (and easier for production). Take a look at both types of lasts and ask yourself which would make a more comfortable shoe...
hand-lasted moccasin. This traditional shoe construction technique (perhaps originating centuries ago on here in New England...) involves hand-stitching the vamp and plug pieces of the pattern together while tacked to the last, thus closing the shoe on the form. The shoe then is left to rest on the last for an additional 24 hours to allow the leather to completely mold and take its proper form. A true moccasin construction uses a single piece of leather to form the bottom. We've modified our pattern by inserting a second piece of leather – but we achieve the same end result of swaddling the foot completely in leather. With the timeless appeal and classic style of the moccasin construction, a true everyday shoe.
groovy, anatomic soul. Lightweight and naturally renewable, the proprietary cork and latex midsole – specifically designed to work with our moccasin upper - provides the incomparable comfort, cushioning and fit as many have learned to expect from those fine European brands of sandals and woolen clogs. You will feel the secure cupping in the heel, the reassuring support under the arch and metatarsals, and the barefoot familiarity of the toe bar. And yes, the cork will mold to your feet. A true, all-day shoe.
